Swearing isn’t an intelligent thing to do. It’s something that intelligent people who’ve rejected God do. They’ve rejected the truth that Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again, so that we may have everlasting life.
We (that’s me and the Holy spirit) have been in many an argument on Twitter where we make a clear point using science and when the atheist science troll (AST) on the other end realizes that they have just made a fool of themselves they break out into a florid rush of verbal sewage. They know how offensive it it, that’s why they do it. They also know that a Christian isn’t supposed to interact with that behavior. A Christian who’s conscience is still intact needs to stop interacting. In Twitter terms: you don’t respond which means you loose. Let the other side win. If you stick around your just going to cause more damage to your soul.
Their strength isn’t right. They’re using something as strength which is a clear demonstration of spiritual weakness. Even so, we can’t afford to continue to engage with people who are intentionally causing spiritual damage through the use of swearing.

You do know that ‘swearing’ in the Bible, and profanity in modern society are two, very different things…. right??! 🙄

Wrong. Swearing an oath (like, I promise to pay my taxes) may be different than profanity, but profanity is profanity. In the Bible the word swearing can refer to either, it’s context dependent.

The Bible may have contextual references to both types of ‘swearing’, but the enjoinder to refrain from swearing seems to be only about using God’s name for trivial or unjustified claims. It ties to the commandment not to take His name in vain, which has nothing to do with using foul language. If The Bible forbids the use of profanity, I am unaware of it. Over to you. 😕

If you want to grow and have understanding you have to connect what you know about the Bible with a sense of the character and nature of God. That can only come through salvation: believing in Jesus Christ.
I don’t know it all, I just know what I’ve been taught by the Holy Spirit because I’m a born again believer in Jesus Christ.
