The Fifth Day

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

(Genesis 1:20-23) KJV

We don’t have any problem with the process of evolution. We would even go so far as to say that speciation happens. Let’s face it, Noah’s Ark was only so big.

There were two horses on Noah’s ark, and now there are at least 7 species in genus Equus. Here’s the thing: the kinds of fish and birds that were created on the fourth day of creation weren’t the product of evolution.

The thing to remember is that evolution is a process that requires that heritable traits are passed from generation to generation. Death is an essential component of the evolutionary process because parents have to pass away and be replaced by modified offspring. Yet the Bible tells us that there was no death before sin entered into the world. I

Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

(Hebrews 9:22) ESV

n Genesis Chapter 3, Adam and Eve disobeyed God. They sinned. The process of senescence began, as they had been warned, and they began to die. Not only that, but God killed animals so that he could use the skins to make clothes for Adam and Eve. Their nakedness had to be covered and to do that something had to die. There is no remission of sins without the shedding of blood. (Hebrews 9:22) It’s all rather tragic really, but it should help us to understand how all of these puzzle pieces fit together.

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned –

(Romans 5:12) NKJV

There couldn’t have been any evolution before sin entered the world, and death by sin. (Romans 5:12). However, the creative process that God undertook was systematic and logical, we refer to it as abiogenesis.

Paleontology, Paleobotany and the various fields of Biology show clearly that organic life is descended from a common ancestor. This has been a widely held belief since before phylogenetic analysis so elegantly demonstrated it. We should not be surprised. We have one creator, whose joy it is to bring order out of chaos. The phylogenetic tree of life merely reveals his method and plan. Our common ancestor even has a name: Jesus Christ.
