He Who Removes Mountains

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength —who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?— he who removes mountains, and they know it not, when he overturns them in his anger, who shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble; who commands the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars; who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea; who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south; who does great things beyond searching out, and marvelous things beyond number.

(Job 9:4-10) ESV

This is Part of Job’s response to Bildad. He’s talking about tectonic upheaval. He was contemporaneous with Abraham, so only 200 or so years have passed since the tectonic breakup of Pangaea.

The Time Span from Noah’s Flood to Peleg (Genesis 11:10-26)

  • Arphaxad was born 2 years after the flood,
  • He was 35 at the birth of Selah,
  • Selah was 30 at the birth of Eber,
  • Eber was 34 at the birth of Peleg,
  • 2 + 35 + 30 + 34 = 101 Years

The Time Span from Peleg to Abraham (Genesis 11:10-26)

  • Peleg was 30 at the birth of Reu
  • Reu was 32 at the birth of Serug
  • Serug was 30 at the birth of Nahor
  • Nahor was 29 at the birth of Terah
  • Terah was 70 at the birth of Abraham
  • 30 + 32 + 30 + 29 + 70 = 201 Years

Part 2 of Job’s response to Bildad addresses, or at least refers to, the difference between soul and spirit

I loathe my life; I will give free utterance to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

You have granted me life and steadfast love, and your care has preserved my spirit.

(Job 10:1, 12) ESV

then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

(Genesis 2:7) ESV

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

(Hebrews 4:12) ESV
