A Crown of Life

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

(James 1:12-18) KJV
– A Crown of Life

What is the Crown of Life?

Eternal life.

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

(John 5:13) KJV

The phrase crown of life occurs in one other passage: the Message to the Church in Smyrna (Revelation 2:8-11). This is a passage about overcoming adversity. It is similar to what James is talking about but more specific.

Enduring Temptation

And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;

I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

(Revelation 2:8-11) KJV

Good and Perfect Gifts

Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

(Psalms 4:4-5) KJV

We can endure temptation by offering the sacrifice of righteousness. When we’ve done that, God is free to give us everything we need. Every good and perfect gift.

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 4:19) NKJV

If we endure temptation we get both what we need for daily living and everlasting life.
