It’s been possible to parse the difference in nuance between the various words used to refer to the afterlife, which corresponds to the interior of the Earth, because we have an absolute frame of reference.
There’s a belly of hell, a midst of hell and a lowest hell, for instance. There’s a pit of corruption and sides of the pit. It’s also necessary to superimpose what we know about the plight of a soul. You can be brought up from the grave, but you can’t be brought out of the pit. This means that, in these instances, the grave is referring to the mantle while the pit is referring to the molten core.
For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.(Psalms 86:13) KJV
There is considerable granularity the closer we look but it all fits together into a consistent model of the interior of the Earth.

The reason for hell is: temporary storage of the accumulated impurity and corruption of creation. It’s a function of of gravity and it’s required for the purification of creation.
