Great Gulf or Outer Core?

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

(2 Thessalonians 2:9-12) New King James Version

Why does Jesus describe a great gulf of open space while popular science (SciPop) has a liquid outer core? It’s a strong delusion so that you’ll believe a lie. The lie is: you don’t need a savior, there’s nothing to be saved from.

When I was a little kid I was terrified of going to hell. If you go to church and listen to the Bible being preached, especially 40+ years ago, you’re going to hear all about it. Imagine how relieved I was when I was sitting in school being taught about the internal structure of the Earth and seeing that hell isn’t there. Phew!

SciPop wants to help you sleep at night.

SciPop is the antidote to God. At least, that’s the plan. It’s designed to put you at ease with the soothing lullaby that there’s no hell, no judgement, noting to worry about. Technically speaking there’s no sin either, so there’s noting to feel guilty about and there’s nothing to be forgiven for. That’s where it seems to break down. We all feel guilt.

But, at least SciPop isn’t making you feel guilty, right? SciPop is your friend. SciPop has arbitrarily decided, based on inconclusive data, that there’s a liquid outer core instead of a great gulf of open space. Stop worrying about it.

Hell (sheol or hades) refers broadly to the underworld realm of the dead and encompasses all of its levels. However, there are times when the context makes it clear that these words refer to a specific level.
