Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
(1 Corinthians 6:17) KJV
Should we be identifying with the Lord? When we used to wear a suit and tie to church we were aware that when we left our apartment, anyone who saw us knew that we were going to church.
If people see us with a suit and tie on, on a Sunday morning, then they know that we’re going to church. We’re making a public statement of our faith. If we look exactly the same as all of our neighbors, how are they going to know that we’re a Christian? If we don’t use clothing to demonstrate our affinity, how are we going to do it?
Maybe it’s not about visual cues or outward appearance. Can our neighbors tell that we’re different when they talk with us? Do we convey anything to them in our conversation that lets them know that we’re sanctified and cleansed by the sacrificial blood of Christ, the lamb slain from the foundation of the world? If they can’t tell from our conversation and our actions then we’re really failing.
When it comes to how we should dress for church our conclusion is that we should be clothed with humility, not with fancy duds.
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for โGod resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.โ
