Her priests have violated My law and profaned My holy things; they have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they have hidden their eyes from My Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.
(Ezekiel 22:26) NKJV
Holy and unholy (profane) are synonyms for clean and unclean. They’re part of how the Bible describes spiritual condition. We’re either alive or dead, spiritual or carnal, giving or receiving, holy or unholy, clean or unclean.
Alive or Dead?
| Alive | Dead |
| Spiritual | Carnal |
| Giving | Receiving |
| Holy | Unholy (profane) |
| Clean | Unclean |
And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.
(Ezekiel 44:23) KJV
How do we put a difference between the holy and profane? One way is to have clothes which are set apart for worship. Some religions or denominations go overboard with this and have ceremonial robes and accessories which are synced to the events calendar of the church.
Obviously there’s a precedent for this, the book of Exodus has detailed descriptions of the elaborate garments which were to be worn by the priests. The thing is, Jesus fulfilled all of the ceremonial law. When we put our faith in his name then we’re not under an obligation to institute a priesthood with fancy garments.
In this sense the command to separate the holy from the profane and the clean from the unclean pertains to our body, the tabernacle in which dwells our soul and the holy spirit. For us this command is all about how we conduct ourselves and what activities we engage in. We ought to be mindful of where we have been and what we’ve been up to before going into the presence of the Lord. We don’t get drunk and then go to church.

Come as You Are
When did this become the idea that you can wear whatever you want to church because it doesn’t matter? Does it matter?
