“Mastodons, camels, horses, and cats.” The description of this paleo environment evokes images of rolling grasslands with herds of camels. A habitat. Not a period of time.
The habitat is preserved and the remains are assigned to the Pliocene. In geological time the Pliocene is the present day.
The Cambrian is also the present day because it was buried in the same event: Noah’s flood. The difference being that on one hand grasslands are assigned to the Pliocene, on the other hand the fossilized remains of the ocean floor are assigned to the Cambrian. It’s a vast interconnected web of inductive, reductive circular reasoning.
