From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.
(Genesis 10:5) NKJV
We have very little scriptural account of what happened in the period between Noah’s flood and Peleg, besides Babel. What we do have, however, indicates that Pangaea had a precursor of the Mediterranean sea.
We see, in this fairly brief period in human history, the origin of some of the names which refer to towns and cities on the coasts of the Mediterranean. It may be the case that the Mediterranean predates the tectonic breakup of Pangaea.
According to the map above, there are a lot of similarities between the names of the descendants of Noah, and the regions around the Mediterranean. It would seem that these places had been settled before the break up of Pangaea, therefore the Mediterranean sea predates it. It also appears that the phrase “the isles of the gentiles” originated before Peleg, and this confirms our hypothesis.
