Constraining Obligations

They shall take care of all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting and fulfill obligations for the Israelites by attending to the service of the tabernacle.

(Numbers 3:8) BSB

A note which was written in an old Bible of ours (which somehow got lost) was taken from something a preacher said at Calvary Baptist Church in Carrboro, NC. We have always felt encouraged by it.

Cherish the tender Spirit of your constraining obligations.

– Preacher at Calvary Baptist Church, Carrboro, NC

The sentiment is something along the lines of being busy will keep you out of trouble. We’ve looked a couple of times to find a scripture verse which states this sentiment but we haven’t found anything.

It came up recently in a conversation we had with a friend. Well, more than a friend, someone in whom we were romantically interested. We were trying to figure out when we might be able to see each other again, and realizing that we were both so busy that it may be a while. As luck would have it, in the interim, we may have reconnected with the true love of our life.

And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained byd the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me.

(Acts 20:22-23) ESV

This passage, about Paul knowing what would befall him if he continued along the path which had been laid out for him by the Holy Spirit, sounds rather grim. There was a time when this aspect of Christian life and work was abhorrent to us, and we spend most of our life on one Jonah-inspired diversion after another. Now all we crave is to have a narrow path, strictly delimited, that we can adhere to.
