Mind The Gap

And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.

  2. Edge The hedge has an edge. Why does the hedge need making up?
  3. Wedge We need a wedge to fix the hedge.

Job 14

Last week I was going to mention the following passage but I didn’t get to it. Pastor Don mentioned it in the sermon that morning!

Jeremiah, like Job, despairs and tries to quit preaching

  • Jeremiah 20:7-9

O LORD, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me.
For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.

  • Lamentations 1:13From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day.

Why was I even born?

  • Jeremiah 20:14-18

Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.
Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.
    And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;
Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.
Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

Today’s chapter: Job wistfully looks forward to a new life in Christ.

  • Job 14:1-6

Man is going to die. His days are numbered.

  • Job 14:7-9

Cut down a tree and it grows back

  • Job 14:10

Where is man while he is dead?

  • Job 14:11-13

Man dies and waits until the heavens be no more and God’s wrath is past.

  • Job 14:14-15
  • Romans 6:4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
  • Colossians 3:1
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
  • 1 Peter 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Does man live again? I will wait the appointed time and then be changed. You will call and I will answer.

  • Job 14:16-17

God knows everything, nothing is hidden.

  • Job 14:18-22

The world will come to nothing and pass away and I won’t be aware of it.

Part 2 of Job’s response to Zophar.

We should be checking the things that we are taught by pastors and preachers:

  • Acts 17:10-11
And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Why do bad things happen to good people? The best reason I have found:

  • Isaiah 57:1
The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.

Jeremiah echoes Job’s lament:

  • Jeremiah 12:1-3
Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?
Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.
But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

No one determines his or her outcome.

  • Jeremiah 17:11
As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

He Who Removes Mountains

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength —who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?— he who removes mountains, and they know it not, when he overturns them in his anger, who shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble; who commands the sun, and it does not rise; who seals up the stars; who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea; who made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the chambers of the south; who does great things beyond searching out, and marvelous things beyond number.

(Job 9:4-10) ESV

This is Part of Job’s response to Bildad. He’s talking about tectonic upheaval. He was contemporaneous with Abraham, so only 200 or so years have passed since the tectonic breakup of Pangaea.

Job 8

Bildad’s response to Job.

  • Job 8:11 – Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water?
“Grass don’t grow without mud, Job.”
