The Forbidden Fruit

Then the Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. He told him, “You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day.”

(Genesis 2:15-17) Good News Translation

Genesis 2:15-17 describes events of the sixth day. It gives us an example of superficial theology. Apparently God lied because Adam didn’t immediately drop dead when he ate the forbidden fruit.

The LORD God planted a garden

Sunlight filtering throught leave of a knarled tree in the fall

Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed. He made all kinds of beautiful trees grow there and produce good fruit. In the middle of the garden stood the tree that gives life and the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.

(Genesis 2:8-9) Good News Translation

Genesis 2:8-9 is topical, not chronological. God planted a garden on the third day, and man was created on the sixth day. Since the garden was made for the man, then that’s how it’s described.

The Creation of Man

And that is how the universe was created.

When the Lord God made the universe, there were no plants on the earth and no seeds had sprouted, because he had not sent any rain, and there was no one to cultivate the land; but water would come up from beneath the surface and water the ground.

Then the Lord God took some soil from the ground and formed a man out of it; he breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live.

(Genesis 2:4-7) Good News Translation

The narrative of Genesis 2 picks up with a broad synopsis of the creative process necessary to provide an environment where intelligent sentient beings, including Homo sapiens, will live.

The Tree of Life

And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

(Genesis 3:22) KJV

In the Bible the phrase “tree of life” is used to refer to an actual tree which has leaves and fruit, but it’s also used euphemistically to refer to the fruits of seeking and gaining wisdom.

Secular Humanism vs. God

Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:

TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.

Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

(Acts 17:22-24) NKJV

It’s one thing to talk about God with Christians, they know God from the Bible. It’s something else to talk with people who don’t go to church and whose knowledge of God comes from atheist propaganda.

The Logic of Eden

A stream flowed in Eden and watered the garden; beyond Eden it divided into four rivers. The first river is the Pishon; it flows around the country of Havilah. (Pure gold is found there and also rare perfume and precious stones.) The second river is the Gihon; it flows around the country of Cush. The third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria, and the fourth river is the Euphrates.

(Genesis 2:10-14) Good News Translation

The logic of Eden is deduced from a simple observation: IF rivers from Eden watered the surface of the Earth, AND water flows downhill, THEN Eden must have been the highest point on the Earth.

Genesis 1 vs. Genesis 2

And that is how the universe was created.

When the Lord God made the universe,

(Genesis 2:4) Good News Translation

Genesis 1 and 2 aren’t contradictory, they have different narrative styles. People who want to see contradictions are looking for an excuse to dismiss the truth, because they don’t want the truth.

The Superficial Theology of Atheism

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.

(Malachi 3:10) NKJV

There has been an interesting discussion on Twitter today. I challenged the ASTs (atheist science trolls) with a way to get the proof of God that they have been demanding. I actually put it in terms of a testable hypothesis for the existence of God. The basis of the test is Malachi 3:10:
