Theory is the Scientific Word for Faith

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

( Hebrews 11:1-3 )

We are going to show that the words faith and theory are synonyms. Sight and empirical are also synonyms. Empirical evidence is what we see. What we choose to believe about it is our faith.

Flat Earth is not Biblical

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

( Isaiah 40:22 )

There is a side effect to the creation of gravity that is going to upset some people: if earth formed around a gravitational singularity then it is spherical. It is impossible for the earth to be flat.

Speaking in Tongues

Open Door Baptist Church

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

( Acts 2:1-13 )

What is speaking in tongues?

According to our context it is speaking in foreighn languages so that you may be understood.

Why do we have language?

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

( Genesis 1:28 )

But what happened?

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

( Genesis 11:1-2 )

This was not God’s will because it didn’t fit his plan.

Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

( Genesis 11:7-9 )

If God has the power to confound language then he has the power to unconfound it.

So God has power over language and the ability for us to understand each other.

Jesus said this:

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

( Mark 16:15 )

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

( Matthew 24:14 )

Has this been accomplished?

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

( Mark 16:20 )

So the gospel has been preached everywhere. It is accomplished. It was done with signs following. The signs, such as speaking in tounges, were to confirm the authenticity of the apostles.

Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

(Acts 5:15 )

And then what happened?

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

( 2 Timothy 4:6-7 )

And what happened to Paul’s power to heal?

Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.

( 2 Timothy 4:20 )

He didn’t have the power to heal anymore.

Do we have the power to speak in tongues?

If I were you I would be very suspicious of anyone who thinks that incoherent babble is speaking in tongues.

Missing the Point

Danby House

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

( Isaiah 58:13-14 )

In my daily Bible reading I have just finished the book of Isaiah. I noticed that at some time in the past I had underlined a verse: the second of the two above.

Now to add some context to this I preached a sermon at Open Door Baptist Church last September called “Desires of Thine Heart.” This sermon was an attempt to understand how we can know whether or not something that we are desiring is godly and helpful, or worldly and destructive.

I think I did a reasonable job of showing how you can use godly judgment to figure out what’s going to be good for you and help you vs. what is going to bed bad for you and hinder you, but I took the long way round. I realize now that I missed the point.

Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

( Psalms 37:4-5 )

Instead of asking:

How do I get the desires of my heart?

I should be asking:

How do I delight myself in the Lord?

The best way to know for sure if what I desire is appropriate is not to try to figure out if my desire is appropriate. I don’t need to figure it out. If I delight myself in the Lord then he will give it to me – whatever it is.

So that brings us back to the first of the two verses which I based this sermon on. The one that I didn’t underline.

Destroying the Wisdom of the Wise

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

Evolution isn’t a Lie

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

(2 Thessalonians 2:9-12) NKJV

The lie isn’t Evolution. The lie is the popular science paradigm (SciPop) starting with gravitation. Evolution is just one badly abused facet.

They are Without Excuse

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Established Forever

( Psalms 78:69 )

Peter Stood Up

Open Door Baptist Church

Acts 1:12-26

12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.

And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
( Luke 24:52 )

13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.

14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

Prayer, supplication and diligent Bible study.

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

Why did Peter stand up? They had been studying the Scriptures and it was time to sum up everything that they had learned.

16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

( Psalms 41:9 )

How is this relevant? Jesus quoted this passage in John’s gospel:

I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.

( John 13:18 )

17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.

( Psalms 55:12-13 )

While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

( John 17:12 )

18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.

( Matthew 27:3-10 )

19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

The prophecy may have been spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, but it was not written not written. However Jeremiah did buy a field in Anathoth, not far from Jerusalem.

And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it. So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.

And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver. And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.

( Jeremiah 32:6-10 )

The prophecy was written by Zechariah

And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.

And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.

( Zechariah 11:12-13 )

When Peter and the disciples realized that Jeremiah and Zechariah wrote 700 years before that the Potter’s field was bought for 30 pieces of silver, and that the money was cast down in the temple, then when Judas cast down the money in the temple and the priests bought the field everything must have clicked into place.

Incidentally, 30 pieces of silver was the price of blood, but Hosea paid 15 pieces of silver to buy his wife.

So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley:

( Hosea 3:2 )

20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

This is a combination of two passages from the Psalms:

1.

Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

( Psalms 69:25 )

This is not the only prophecy about Christ in Psalms 69

They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

( Psalms 69:21 )

2.

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

( Psalms 109:8 )

21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
