The Sign of Jonah

For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

(Matthew 12:40) ESV

The sign of Jonah is one of those things which looks like a Biblical inconsistency and the various ways that Christian scholars have tried to resolve it don’t work. On the face of it, it looks like Jesus lied.

Newton’s Firmament

Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord of hosts is his name:

“If this fixed order departs from before me, declares the Lord, then shall the offspring of Israel cease from being a nation before me forever.”

(Jeremiah 31:35-36) ESV

The Sign of Jonah

A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

(Matthew 16:4) KJV

The sign of Jonah looks like a Biblical inconsistency. We (that’s me and the Holy Spirit) have never been able to figure out how Friday night to Sunday morning is three days and three nights. Just sayin’.
