The Grave: שְׁא֣וֹל – sheol

I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

(Hosea 13:14) KJV

A word frequently translated as the grave is the Hebrew שְׁא֣וֹל – sheol, but sheol is far more than just the grave. The grave is a portal into the underworld realm of the dead.

The Dry Land

And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

(Genesis 1:9-10) English Standard Version

God made the dry land appear on the third day. The dry ground is, obviously, the surface of the Earth. For our purposes the surface of the Earth is considered to be a feature of the crust.

The Lower Parts of the Earth

There is Elam and all her multitude, All around her grave, All of them slain, fallen by the sword, Who have gone down uncircumcised to the lower parts of the earth, Who caused their terror in the land of the living; Now they bear their shame with those who go down to the Pit.

The lower parts of the Earth, or nether parts, is one of several phrases which describe physical features of the interior of the Earth that we can assign to the mantle.
