Why “F = ma” is the most important equation in physics

From high school through the professional ranks, physicists never tire of Newton’s second law.

  • What seems like a simple, three-letter equation contains an enormous amount of information about our Universe.
  • The physics within it is vital for understanding all of motion, while the mathematics is the most important application of calculus to our reality.
  • By thinking about it properly, this equation can even lead us to relativity, and remains eternally useful to physicists of all levels.

Principia Mathematica

There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father—your father the king—made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers.

(Daniel 5:11) NKJV

Some time ago while studying Newton’s Principia Mathematica it struck us that it would be funny and ironic to write a parody called Principia Mattymatica, the Mattymatical principles of natural theology.

The Physics of the Gospel

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

(Hebrews 12:1) English Standard Version

Believing in Jesus Christ is the power to overcome the gravity of the Earth (Mosaic gravity or the law) which is the force of attraction that’s pulling us down into hell.

The Gospel is Physics

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—

(Ephesians 2:4-5) Good News Translation

Passing from death to life is referred to as being quickened, q. We’re quickened when we put our faith in Jesus Christ. It’s also called being saved, or “born again.”

The Gospel is Physics (logic)

  • IF being dead in sins (pG) is when we’re under the power of the law (M),
    • AND we receive the forgiveness of sin (A),
      • when we’re quickened (q) through faith in Jesus Christ,
  • THEN pGxq=A. (F=MA)
