Sodium Hydroxide

If I wash myself with snow and cleanse my hands with lye, yet you will plunge me into a pit, and my own clothes will abhor me.

(Job 9:30-31) ESV

Soap and nitre, also known as lye, or anything else we use to cleanse ourselves, contains Hydroxyl (OH). This is frequently in the form of Sodium Hydroxide. It’s part of a definition of the Hebrew word for soap.

Purging and Cleansing

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

(Hebrews 1:3) ESV

The Son of God, through whom all things were made, not only made creation possible but his ongoing role throughout history has been to purge it of all impurity and corruption.

Create, purge: בֹּרִית – barar

I will purge the rebels from among you, and those who transgress against Me; I will bring them out of the country where they dwell, but they shall not enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.

(Ezekiel 20:38) NKJV

Purging ties in with the broad narrative of scripture of refining and purification, the agent of which is the Lord Jesus Christ. Here’s the meaning of the Hebrew root from which their word for soap is derived.

But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap:

( Malachi 3:2 )

soap: וּכְבֹרִ֖ית – borith

  • lye ( Sodium hydroxide, NaOH ),
  • alkali,
  • potash,
  • soap, used in washing

The coming judgment of God is described as being, among other things, like being washed with strong soap. Let’s take a look at the word translated as “soap” and see if it has any connection with Chemistry.

Hydroxyl (OH)

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil,

(Isaiah 1:16) ESV

Chemically, Hydroxyl (OH) is a cleaning agent. Cleansing goes with the concepts of purification, refinement and sanctification. For what purpose was Jesus Christ begotten? Our cleansing.
