And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
(Revelation 9:1-2) KJV
A gravitational singularity at the center of the Earth stopped time. If time slows down the closer we get to it, then we’ll never get there. It’s a relativistic conundrum, and the center of the Earth has an event horizon.
We’ve deduced that hell below, the lowest hell, the pit and the pit of corruption are ways in which the Bible refers to the molten core of the Earth, but what’s the bottomless pit?

The Center of a Sphere
The center of the Earth is bottomless because, theoretically, you could sink down through the Earth, enter hell, then pass all the way through it until you were on the other side and be traversing back up to the surface of the Earth again. It is, quite literally, bottomless.
Gravitational Time Dilation
Another way to understand the bottomless pit is to think in terms of gravitational time dilation (GDE). The further away from the singularity we are, the faster time passes. One day on the surface of the Earth is equal to 1,000 years at the radial distance of the firmament. The closer we get to the singularity the slower time goes until it stops completely, therefore it would be impossible to get there and the center of the Earth has an event horizon. The pit inside the Earth is literally bottomless.
Is the Core Solid or Molten?
The phrase bottomless pit also confirms that the core of the Earth is molten, because if it were solid then that would be the bottom of the pit.
Scriptural Context
And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
(Revelation 9:11) KJV
A fourth way to understand the bottomless pit is from the context of the passages which mention it. They, in the passage above, refers to an army of horse-sized armor-plated locusts with scorpion tails who will swarm up from below the surface of the Earth after one of the extraterrestrial impacts in the tribulation. Obviously the bottomless pit is inside the Earth.
And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
(Revelation 11:7) KJV
Once again we have orientation, direction of motion, which tells us that the bottomless pit is below the surface of the Earth.
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
(Revelation 17:8) KJV
Ascending out of the bottomless pit and going into perdition occurs in the context of judgement when all who aren’t found in the lamb’s book of life are cast into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. The bottomless pit and the lake of fire aren’t the same thing.
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
(Revelation 20:1-3) KJV
The bottomless pit has to be the molten core of the Earth: hell. Satan is imprisoned in hell while the beast and false prophet are in the lake of fire. Hell and the lake of fire coexist but they’re not the same thing. Hell is in the center of the earth, the lake of fire is in outer darkness.
