Peleg’s Tectonics
To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.
(1 Chronicles 1:19) NKJV
Peleg’s small and unremarkable appearance in the Bible allows us to resolve the expansion of hell, tectonic plates, evolution, distribution of biodiversity, and the fulfillment of prophecy with a theory of gravity.
Let’s tell you a story. In 2009 we (that’s me and the Holy Spirit) made our first trip back to England in 10 years. The period between 1999 and 2009 was particularly difficult as we were in the USA with no family, juggling being a single dad of two young children, working for a living, being faithful in church, and studying the Bible.
The kids came first so we worked low paying jobs and weird hours so that we’d be able to pick them up from school every day. We helped them with their homework, feed them, and had them ready to be picked up by their moms when they got off work. Back then we were only beginning to reconcile the Bible with science, but we had a few solid ideas and we were starting to understand deduction.
Deductive reasoning, also deductive logic, logical deduction or, informally, “top-down” logic, is the process of reasoning from one or more statements (premises) to reach a logically certain conclusion. It differs from inductive reasoning or abductive reasoning.
– Deductive Reasoning, definition (Wikipedia)
We didn’t really know what we were doing, but we knew that we needed to be doing it. We studied the Bible every chance we got. We found it particularly interesting when deduction, like realizing that Noah’s flood must have been before the breakup of Pangaea, lead to the discovery of Bible passages which appeared to support our conclusion. We found that the Bible can be used as a predictive, testable hypothesis. Peleg’s tectonics and the breakup of Pangaea is Hypothesis 35. This has profound implications for Creationism.
