They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.
(Job 17:16) KJV
We’re considering Biblical synonyms of “the pillars of the earth,” part of Earth’s internal structure. They’re in the great chasm, or gulf, the region which popular science (SciPop) arbitrarily designates as the liquid outer core.
Synonyms for the Pillars of the Earth
| Synonym | Scripture | |
| 1 | The beams of his chambers | Psalms 104:3 |
| 2 | The earth with her bars | Jonah 2:6 |
| 3 | The bars of the pit | Job 17:16 |
| 4 | The pillars of the earth | 1 Samuel 2:8 |
Historically the earliest usage of any of these phrases is Job 17:16. He refers to “the pit” and speaks of resting there with the other dead. This is a reference to sheol, not tehom. This passage is referring to the interior of the Earth after the waters of the great deep have been driven off (Amos 7:4). Tehom is gone, all that’s left is open space.
Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
(Amos 7:4) KJV
“The pit” also includes tartarus, which specifically refers to the molten core of the Earth. This was not exposed to view (of anyone under the Earth) until after the time of Peleg when the Earth’s crust collapsed and tectonic plates formed.
