Turn to the LORD With all Your Heart

Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.

(2 Kings 23:25) NKJV

This passage is about King Josiah, one of the most godly of the kings in the Old Testament. He was made king at age eight after his father’s disastrous 2-year reign.

What’s interesting is that we’re told that he walked in the ways of king David, he didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left, but he didn’t read the Book of the Law (the first five books of the Bible) until he was 18 years old.

The shock of realizing that none of the laws were being followed correctly caused him to implement sweeping reforms and he led one of the most joyful revivals in the Bible. His heart was tender towards the Lord before he knew what the Bible says. We all do. We all instinctively know what’s right and wrong. We have a conscience.

How we respond to what the Lord has revealed to us is an expression of our free will. We can choose to reject it, or rebel against it. We can also choose to accept it, and turn to the Lord.

Why wouldn’t we? What else is there, really, that’s worth devoting ourselves to?
