But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Many people drifted away from Jesus when he started talking about things that they really had to think hard about. When they realized that they weren’t going to get a free lunch they quickly deserted him.
However, the faithful stayed with him. They didn’t understand either, but they trusted him. We have probably not done a very good job of explaining this, but it’s a start.
