The High Price of Epistemological Buffoonery

And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

(Luke 16:23) KJV

Threatening people with hell isn’t an effective communication technique. You’ll be dismissed as a kook. The problem is, despite the fact that popular science (SciPop) appears to have a compelling rationale for why hell isn’t at the center of the Earth, it’s very easy to demonstrate the weaknesses of this rationale.

Eternity and The Heart

a jawbone

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.

(Ecclesiastes 3:11) NKJV

Our investigation into the nature of the soul and gravity has led us to realize the importance of a phenomenon known as gravitational time dilation. It’s what we euphemistically refer to as the donkey’s jawbone.

A Definition of Time

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

(Jeremiah 1:5) KJV

It’s helpful to understand the relationship that God has with time. Time and gravity are bound together in an intricate way so much so that our definition of gravity can be used to derive a definition of time.

Eternity: הָעֹלָם֙ – haolam

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.

(Ecclesiastes 3:11) NKJV

A gravitational singularity stops time. If time isn’t passing at the singularity, but all around it time passes at a rate proportional to the square of the distance from it, then time is both not passing, and all of it has passed, simultaneously.

Hell is Below, Heaven is Above

Diagram showing how gravitational time dilation can account for observed redshift

Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

(Job 11:7-8) KJV

Hell is down, deep and below; heaven is up, high and above. There are many examples in scripture which are consistent with this orientation. Hell is never referred to as above, heaven is never referred to as below.

YEC Spaghetti Theology

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

(John 16:13) KJV

Young Earth creationists (YECs) have been fighting the good fight for decades but it has led to the current situation where it looks like Christianity and intellectual exploration are different ends of a spectrum. Now we’re at a crossroads.

YECs have been bogged down on two fronts:

  1. Science vs. faith,
  2. creation vs. evolution.
