The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved. The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people. Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy. The king’s strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions. Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
(Psalm 99:1-9) KJV
We started November and our study of the Millennial Kingdom in the book of Isaiah. All of the passages that we have looked at have come from either Isaiah and the prophets or the book of Revelation. However there is at least one older reference to the idea that the earth will be moved and shaken, and the Lord will rule from his Holy mountain high above the people, Psalm 99.
Here are all the elements: let the earth be moved; the Lord is great in Zion and he is high above all the people; exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill. These ideas have been combined together for a very long time. Different people have at different times tried to imagine what this may look like.

This is definitely one of the strangest. This captures the notion of a great mountain that fills the whole earth, but it doesn’t look like something that God would make to me. God is all wise and all knowing and has an eye for beauty.
This isn’t beautiful. It’s stupid. God isn’t stupid.
For one thing the gradient on the mountain is so steep that no one would be able to walk up it. This seems to me more like a frivolous spoof made by a mocker. No need to take it seriously at all.

This one is a very backwards attempt to reconcile the temple described by Ezekiel with the Lord’s Holy mountain. Nice effort, particularly on the dimensions of the temple walls, but again, misguided.
This has the temple at the top of a mountain, but the mountain is inside the walls of the temple? It certainly isn’t a mountain which fills the whole earth. Besides, it looks stupid. God isn’t stupid.

Here’s my first attempt to picture the idea of a mountain that fills the whole earth.
This is based on assuming that the Holy mountain would simply be made from the present earth, but it doesn’t account for several of the other important elements of the scriptural narrative. For example, it doesn’t account for the impact of a giant meteorite, or the falling to earth of billions of tons of stellar material. Besides, it looks stupid. God isn’t stupid.
After spending 3 weeks working on this devotion, diligently examining all of the scriptural references that must be considered, I’m satisfied with the result. We have developed a model of the Millennial Kingdom earth which incorporates all elements from the narrative:
- the land surface is shaped into one mountain,
- everyone can see the temple and the glory of God from wherever they are on the earth (dry ground/habitable portion),
- it allows for the crust of the earth to be split open by an asteroid impact,
- it allows for billions of tons of stellar material to fall,
- it allows the establishment of an hydrological system in which water upwells at the temple in Jerusalem,
- it mitigates the environmental problems associated with the continued expansion of hell,
- it is, in my opinion, beautiful.
Let me know if we missed anything.
Most importantly it doesn’t look stupid. God isn’t stupid. God is incredibly wise and has provided for all of our need for all of history. He’s going to provide an equable climate for the Millennial Kingdom, it won’t be a scorched desert.
Our featured image for the day actually looks like something that God had planned from before the beginning. Tomorrow we will begin the process of wrapping up this study, and looking at any loose ends that we need to account for in the model of the Millennial Kingdom earth that we have constructed.
