The Lake of Fire

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

(Revelation 21:8) NKJV

An issue regarding the establishment of the Millennial Kingdom which we have to resolve is: What and where is the lake of fire? It may be the planet Venus.

The end of the tribulation is marked by Christ’s victory over his enemies and there are some details here which we need to incorporate into our model and our understanding of what the Earth of the Millennial Kingdom will be like.

The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut; Its transgression shall be heavy upon it, And it will fall, and not rise again.

(Isaiah 24:20) NKJV

It’s also necessary to bear in mind that the surface of the Earth has been ravaged by plagues. It’s been bombarded with burning hail, poisoned, and the sea turned to blood. The dry land has been moved great distances to bring it together into a super-continent which has been stretched out and lifted up to a new radius of 10, 795 km. It’s been devastated.

At the establishment of the Millennial Kingdom Jesus Christ will rule the Earth from Jerusalem for 1,000 years. The beast and false prophet will be cast into a lake of fire and brimstone.

And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

(Revelation 19:20) KJV

We’re also told that Satan will be bound for the duration of the millennium and then be cast into the lake of fire. The beast and false prophet were cast into the lake of fire at the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom, Satan is cast into the lake of fire at the end of it.

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Obviously the lake of fire isn’t the location of Satan during the Millennial Kingdom. He’s somewhere else. If we can identify the location where Satan is bound then it’ll help us to deduce where the lake of fire is, because they’re not the same place.

Firstly the beast and false prophet are cast into the lake of fire. Revelation goes on to tell us that, at this time, Satan is cast into the bottomless pit. We have previously resolved the bottomless pit as being the molten core of the Earth, also referred to as the lowest hell. Does this mean that hell and the lake of fire are different locations?

We have two confirmations that hell and the lake of fire are different locations but that they coexist.

1. After Satan spends 1,000 years in his prison (hell) he will be loosed to cause one more round of trouble before being cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. This means that hell and the lake of fire have been coexistent for the whole duration of the Millennial Kingdom
2. At the final judgement death and hell will be cast into the lake of fire.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
