Principles of Biochemistry

Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”

(Genesis 37:19-20) NKJV

We (that’s me and the Holy spirit) replied to a question “how do you cope with writer’s block?” We don’t have writer’s block, we write everyday. It’s a simple solution.

It was a rather dull and mechanical response which wasn’t received very well. You can’t please everyone. Whatever, we have a process and we stick to it. We went for over three years writing and publishing something every day. Even after a short break it was easy to slip back into a daily routine where something gets written or edited every day. There’s no such thing as writer’s block, that’s just a lack of discipline.

The structure that we’ve built and the discipline that we’ve learned means that it’s not that hard to turn out something everyday, but the scope of our work is so broad that we can choose what we write in such a way that it’s possible to avoid certain things. This post is one that we’ve been avoiding for the last 3 years. Being systematic is a way to force yourself to deal with things that you otherwise wouldn’t.

It’s very exciting when a new opportunity comes along and it can be a lot of fun to learn new skills, meet new people and have an impact. It doesn’t take long for the newness to wear off and things start to get boring. Writing the index for a Biochemistry textbook is an exciting challenge until you realize what’s really involved.

Intellectual slavery. Slavery is a hard subject which shouldn’t be taken lightly. It’s not something that a white person should be writing about, especially in a light hearted and possibly flippant manner. But we’re not talking about imprisoning people or forcing them to work against their will. Intellectual slavery is when you’re required to concentrate on material that’s not you’re own. You have to digest and process technical information which may not be very interesting. It requires such complete focus that all other thoughts have to be forced out or set aside until the task is completed.

When you’re a day dreamer it’s necessary to have a free mind. Manual labor is perfect for the day dreamer. You can go through the motions and complete whatever task you’ve been given while your imagination is off exploring history or alien world. You can fantasize about girls while you’re mowing grass. You can contemplate particle physics while you’re painting a house. You can imagine that you’re writing a best selling novel while you’re vacuuming an office building.

Principles of Biochemistry

You can’t day dream while you’re being paid to use your mind to process facts and data about biochemistry for the purpose of making an alphabetical arrangement so that people can find information.

We found out what we don’t like to do.
