Principle II
The Original Languages Contain the Mind of Christ
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
(Psalms 12:6-7) KJV
People who believe the Bible also believe that there are right Bibles and wrong Bibles. The reasons for why are so complicated that a recent attempt to “shed light” on the issue may be the worst book ever written. It’s on a par with the poetry of Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings.
As you may well imagine we’re going to do this very differently. We conclude that some Bible versions emphasize technical accuracy and others are more theologically expedient. Having said that, no Bible version is perfect because they’re all context dependent. We’re referring to the historical context, and the level of understanding available at the time that it was translated, regarding the fundamental principles of the universe.
We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.
– Matty’s Razor
For example, conservative Christians regard the King James Version to be the only Bible you will ever need because it’s the closest to the original languages. This is technically true because the KJV predates Newton and captures for us the childlike (in comparison) view of the universe of the pre-enlightenment mind. When the KJV translators lacked understanding they substituted technical accuracy.
In contrast, the modern enlightened mind dispenses with technical accuracy and substitutes its own understanding: the Star Trek universe. This is what we refer to as theological expediency because it’s designed to allow the Bible to be understood within the popular science paradigm (SciPop). This is the world of textual criticism which is now irrelevant.
Something else to bear in mind is that Hebrew and Greek words tend to be imbued with a lot more meaning than their English equivalents. This is to say that any English translation of a Hebrew or Greek word captures only a small portion of the original meaning, and the nuance in meaning is revealed by the translator’s frame of reference. This means that even though English versions may have a wide variety of meanings of how they translate the same verse, technically none of them are wrong.
We have to look beyond the KJV to the original languages because we have a new context: Matty’s Paradigm. Our context combines the childlike simplicity of the pre-enlightenment mind with sub-atomic physics and a Biblical theory of gravity which is free from the baggage of relativity.
