Blood, fire, and vapor of smoke

Open Door Baptist Church

Acts 2:14-28

15 the third hour of the day: 9am

Peter is coming out of a 10-day period of intense Bible study which was what lead him to figure out that they had to replace Judas. He and the others had probably read every parchment and scripture that they had 10 times over. He is filled with the Holy SPirit, but he is also bubbling over with the word of God.

17 Peter quotes Joel 2

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

( Joel 2:28 )

Joel was echoing something prophesied by Isaiah:

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

( Isaiah 44:3 )

18 Peter quotes Joel 2

And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

( Joel 2:29 )

19 Peter quotes Joel 2

And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

( Joel 2:30 )

20 Peter quotes Joel 2:31,

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

( Joel 2:31 )

The disciples have realized that a lot of scripture was written about the days in which they were living. They must be wondering if this has already happened, when Christ died on the cross. Many others would have been wondering too:

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

( Luke 23:44 )

Was this the darkness of the great and terrible day of the Lord that had been prophesied? They no doubt remembered something else that Jesus said, and made another connection:

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

( Malachi 4:5 )

According to Jesus, John the Baptist was the prophesied coming of Elijah:

And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

( Matthew 17:10-13 )

21 Peter quotes Joel 2

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

( Joel 2:32 )

25 Peter quotes Psalms 110:1

A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

( Psalms 110:1 )

26 Peter quotes Psalms 16:9

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

( Psalms 16:9 )

27 Peter quotes Psalms 16:10

For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

( Psalms 16:10 )

Is this an echo of Job? And does this again point to the time in which they are living?

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

( Job 19:25-26 )

28 Peter quotes Psalm 16 again

You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

( Psalms 16:11 )

Then he pauses for a breath.
