Take Care How You Build

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

(1 Corinthians 3:10-11) ESV

Every one who interacts with the Bible with the intention of influencing what people think about it will be held accountable.

The Bible is a lot of things to a lot of people and one of them is a stern warning to anyone who wants to work with the material in it and make something out of it. Paul laid the foundation, Jesus Christ, and then warns those of us who build upon it.

“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

(Revelation 22:12-13) ESV

If you think that you can dip into the Bible willy-nilly and make up nonsense then take heed. If you think you’re being really clever and came up with something completely new then take heed.

Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

(1 Corinthians 3:12-15) ESV

Each one’s work will become manifest is the same warning that we find in today’s featured passage for what he has done. It may sound absolutely preposterous, especially to Christians, to identify Alpha as Hydrogen, the proton, and Omega as a pure form of the Oxygen nuclei.

Folks may be besides themselves at the mere suggestion that God could be, or needs to be, identified at all. Their fear is that representing God as symbols on a chart makes Him irrelevant and He can be dismissed after all – which is what the atheists have been saying all along.

You see the reason why both John in Revelation and Paul in 1 Corinthians give their warnings? Be very careful. Even with the best of intentions our work could have unintended consequences. Here’s the best part: God knew that people couldn’t help themselves but interact with the Bible, with both good and bad intentions. The thing is, the gospel is the same, nothing has changed. Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ.

because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
