Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
(2 Corinthians 6:17) NKJV
Separation is a scriptural doctrine which is generally thought of in terms of Christians holding themselves apart from the rest of the world and avoiding worldly distraction which can lead us into sin. There’s more to it than that.
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
(Ephesians 5:8-13) KJV
The distinctions between light and darkness are stated by Paul and are part of our calling as Christians in the world. The idea here is that even though the world is full of darkness we are to avoid it to the greatest extent possible. This is a big part of the challenge of Christian life because there are so many distractions and temptations which are trying to pull us back into the darkness.
Separation is an important part of successful Christian life. This is one reason why it’s important for a Christian to be part of a community in a local church. Separation is the essence of the purpose of creation.
The purpose of creation is to bring about the permanent physical separation of light from darkness, day from night, good from evil.
– The Purpose of Creation
God created an eternal fixed point in space, a singularity which stopped time. From it a field emanates that causes matter to be ordered around it so that the light and darkness can be physically separated. Light is above, where God dwells. Darkness is below, where we are. This will change at the end of the age when light and darkness trade places.
