And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(1 Thessalonians 5:23) KJV
IF the body is the dust of the earth, AND the spirit is from God, THEN the soul is us: our consciousness and personality.
The Bible tells us that humans have both a soul and a spirit. Once upon a time we thought that it would be possible to look up all of the times the words soul and spirit occur in the Bible and discern a pattern which would delineate one from the other. It was confusing and it came to look like soul and spirit were synonyms, words used interchangeably for the same thing.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
(Hebrews 4:12) ESV
The thing is, soul and spirit can’t be the same thing because the Holy Spirit is able to divide between them. So what’s the difference?
