Soul vs. Body

And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again. And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

(1 Kings 17-21-22) KJV

The connection between the soul and the blood, as the life of the individual, is strong but there’s more to it than that. The soul isn’t simply the result of the spirit dissolving in the blood.

What is Life?

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

(Genesis 1:20-23) KJV

The biological definition of life and what the Bible describes as living aren’t the same thing. This is important to know as we see how the process of creation unfolded. Biology is the foundation of secular humanism.

The Life is In the Blood

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

(Leviticus 17:11) KJV

A spirit from God, literally breath, gives life to our body by energizing metabolism through the action of the hemoglobin molecule. We can deduce that blood is the seat of the spirit, not the soul.

The Life Is In The Blood

June 15

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.

(Leviticus 17:11-14) KJV

We are forbidden to eat blood because the blood is the life of a creature. Is this equivalent to the soul? If I can “pour out my soul,” does it mean that the soul inhabits the blood?

Every Moving Creature has a Soul

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

(Genesis 1:20) KJV

When the Bible refers to living creatures that have life, it’s referring to a sentient being which has a spirit and a soul. It’s not equivalent to the biological definition of life.

What is Life?

Then God commanded, “Let the water be filled with many kinds of living beings, and let the air be filled with birds.”

(Genesis 1:20) Good News Translation

The Waters Became Blood

And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments. And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

(Revelation 16:4-12) KJV

I know a lot of people find it hard to reconcile the idea of a righteous God with vials of plagues being poured out upon the earth. It’s in a similar vein to the idea that a loving God wouldn’t send people to hell.

The Third Trumpet/Vial

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

(Revelation 8:10-11) KJV

And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.

(Revelation 16:4-7) KJV

The third trumpet is a 3rd plague which involves large quantities of material falling out of the sky. The stars fall from heaven as the continents are moved into a contiguous landmass.
