You Shall Die of Dying

Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

(Genesis 2:15-17) NKJV

Did the curse on the serpent happen immediately, or did it occur in the first generation of offspring? We could make the case either way, but, since we don’t know for sure let’s consider what God said to Adam about the tree of knowledge.

Death-like shadow: וְצַלְמָֽוֶת – tsalmaveth

He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.

(Job 28:3) KJV

Mass sinks in time, into stratified layers of sediment: a solid core on fire in the darkness, sunk in the shadow of death.

The shadow of death: וְצַלְמָֽוֶת – tsalmaveth [death-like shadow, deep shadow] meaning to roll or tumble down. i.e. sink, sinking in the shadow of death.

Death-like shadow: וְצַלְמָֽוֶת – tsalmaveth

  • Root not used; Arab. to be obscure, dark; Syr. to figure, delineate.
    1. to tingle, of the ears; trop. of the lips, to quiver, Hab. 3:16, Hiph. to tingle, 1 Sa. 3:11.
    2. Kal to roll or tumble down. i.e. sink, Ex. 15:10
    3. Kal to be shaded, dark, Ne. 13:19.

A stone: אֶ֖בֶן – eben

A stone: אֶ֖בֶן – eben

  1. a stone, generally; the common stone of the field; a stone which may be thrown with the hand; hail stones; shining stones; obdurate heart.
  2. precious stone, gem.
