Effect, Cause and the Reprobate Mind

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

(Romans 1:28) KJV

The “reprobate mind” of Romans 1:28 is a consequence of rejecting the relationship between cause and effect. It manifests as a refusal to acknowledge the relationship between behavior and consequences.

Darkness

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

(2 Corinthians 4:6) ESV

We’re discussing the very beginning of creation, Genesis 1:1-2, and we have an intriguing question: if God is light, in whom is no darkness at all, then why was there darkness upon the face of the deep?

Clear as Crystal

And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. (Romans 3:24-26) NKJV

Being cleansed of my sin and made holy is achieved through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. This is justification.

My Sin

But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

(Romans 3:21-23) NKJV

Original sin caused the fallen condition of mankind, but it’s not the reason for the fallen state of creation and and it’s not an excuse for the sin that I/you/we commit. I’m not going to have to pay the penalty for original sin, but I’m going to have to pay the penalty for my sin. Recognition of the fact that we all are sinners is essential for salvation.

Original Sin

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned –

(Romans 5:12) NKJV

Why is original sin such a big deal, and why did Adam and Eve eating forbidden fruit have such a profound impact on the world. Why does it still impact each of our lives today? The simple answer: Physics.
