What is Satan?

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

(Revelation 12:9) KJV

Satan (adversary) is described here as a physical* being. However even Christians who are otherwise orthodox and fundamental don’t think that he is one.

Leviathan

May 6

In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

(Isaiah 27:1) KJV

We were recently told that Leviathan didn’t exist but it’s used in the Bible as a metaphor for Babylon. It was on Twitter, so the individual didn’t know what they were talking about.

Dragon Taxonomy

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Being able to believe the Bible is more wonderful than you can imagine. Among other things we get to study dragons because they’re real.

Bats are Birds

“And these you shall detest among the birds; they shall not be eaten; they are detestable: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, the kite, the falcon of any kind, every raven of any kind, the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind, the little owl, the cormorant, the short-eared owl, the barn owl, the tawny owl, the carrion vulture, the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.

(Leviticus 11:13-19) ESV

People have found some ingenious reasons to reject the truth of the Bible. There are some others which aren’t ingenious, not by a long shot.

Species Concepts

(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Understanding how the process of evolution incorporates into the creation narrative solves a lot of issues, not the least of which is the potential space problem on Noah’s ark.

Extinction of Some Species

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

(Genesis 3:17) KJV

“Extinction of some species.” Dead bodies buried in sediment from Noah’s flood represent entire flocks, herds and populations of animals. If they were the only living members of their species, that’s why they’re extinct.
