Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:

The expansion of hell was such a well-known phenomenon to the ancient Hebrews that Habakkuk uses it as a metaphor for a man whose desire for drink and carousing is insatiable.
Here the reference isn’t directly to hell expanding. In this case hell expanding is being used as a metaphor for a man with an insatiable appetite for carousing and drunkenness. What we can take from this is that the idea that hell is expanding was so well-known to the ancient Hebrews that it could be used to picture other activities. The man’s desire is enlarging, as hell is, becoming fat, swollen, and gorging itself on everything that is available.

Hell Begins
The first reference to hell in the Bible is also the passage that tells us that hell had a beginning. It tells us that the expansion of hell is melting the Earth from the inside out.
