Social Media and the Great Commission
When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.(Ezekiel 3:18-19) KJV
We (that’s me and the Holy spirit) are going to warn everyone about hell whether they like it or not. If they don’t listen it’s too bad, but their blood won’t be on our hands.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.(Matthew 28:19-20) KJV
Then consider this: Jesus Christ gave the church a great commission, intending for us to make outreach to the world our top priority. It’s the church’s job to warn everyone about the danger that’s coming. In the old days, as part of how churches fulfilled this commission, they had visitation programs. Church members go out in twos or groups from house to house, knocking on doors, literally getting into people’s faces about their eternal destiny. Very few churches have a visitation program today. It’s fallen into ill repute. The prevailing attitude now seems to be that it is too dangerous, confrontational, and is universally despised by the recipients so that it’s just not worth it. In the new COVID-19 reality it’s definitely not advisable.
So what are we to do?
Social media can reach people all around the world, so it would seem that there’s a moral imperative to use it to reach as many people as possible. Let’s face it, all this technology and the power of the internet surely has more value than to simply promote pornography. Plus, if our endeavor is within the will of God, then His divine power and influence will be brought to bear. Theoretically it’s possible for the collective consciousness of internet users to be familiar with our message.
Given this backdrop, of multiple multimedia platforms able to reach about 1.6 billion people around the world just through smartphones, let’s think about this: would it be possible to have our evangelical outreach woven into the cultural fabric of our time?
