Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
(Matthew 28:19-20) KJV
Given the timeliness of social media the world wide web it would seem to be the perfect vessel for carrying out the great commission. However Christian attitudes to social media are variable.
One school of thought is that social media is worldly so it should be avoided. There are churches where the members monitor each other to make sure that they’re not using the internet as it was intended.
Then there are others who, frankly, we’re at a loss to understand. They accept social media and embrace it, but it seems to be a means for them to fluff their feathers with one of the most incomprehensible metrics we’ve seen. They’re the 10%ers. Instagram Prima donnas. People who follow about 100 people (their friends and family) but you have about 1,000 followers (everyone else). The attitude seems to be, if not stated as such, you can follow me, but I don’t have to follow you, I don’t have to acknowledge your existence even though you’ve acknowledged mine. This doesn’t embody scriptural principles or the teachings of Christ.
Does this matter? Is it really necessary or practical to apply Biblical teaching to social media? Can we use social media to carry out the great commission, and, if we can, are the majority of Christians blowing their opportunity to have a world-wide evangelistic outreach?
We’ve developed an 8-point plan for how Christians can have an outreach on social media which embodies Biblical teaching.
