Walking in Imagination

Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do; but they did them not.

(Jeremiah 11:8) KJV

Popular culture wants you to believe that truth is relative and that we all have our own. If you can imagine it, you can believe it. If you believe it, then it’s true for you. This perfectly summarizes the state of popular science (SciPop) today as seen in the way that the Hawking Effect has been used to modify the scientific method.

Once upon a time science was conservative and bound by the rules of evidence, similar to how law and the courts operate. In the 1990s something remarkable happened when Stephen Hawking stumbled on a way to dispense with the rules and rework the scientific method as a way of walking in the imagination of the heart.

Hawking wrote some hugely popular books which were, ostensibly, an objective review of scientific advancement through history. They were written so that nearly anyone could understand them. He pulled together the loose strands of the last 100 or so years of physics and wove them into a compelling narrative for the origin, or lack thereof, of the universe.

It was speculative, and admittedly so. What happened though, was that the overwhelming success of his work meant that it was peer reviewed by society at large, not the scientific establishment. The collective consciousness of our time liked it and accepted it. Now Hawking’s speculative narrative is the scientific backbone around which all work since has revolved. Hawking was a Trekkie so, naturally enough, SciPop and science fiction became the same thing.

The scientific method has been transformed by what we call the Hawking Effect.

The Scientific Method Post Hawking

  • If it’s plausible it’s possible.
  • If it’s possible it happened.
  • It has to have happened because we exist.
  • The chances of us existing are so remotely tiny that our existence proves our hypothesis (whatever it is).

June 8 (19) – Our Heart of Imagination

Godless people will tell you: peace, there’s no danger of hell. They’ll point to mainstream science (SciPop) as proof, then pick up their anti-depressants at a drive thru pharmacy.
