All Life is One

If He should set His heart on it, If He should gather to Himself His Spirit and His breath, All flesh would perish together, And man would return to dust.

(Job 34:14-15) NKJV

What is life? There’s a biological definition of life. There’s also a contextual definition of what the Bible tells us is living. They’re not the same thing.

Life is one. Whatever the form in which it manifests itself, whatever its habitat and type of adaptation, it uses the same structures, the same kinds of molecules, the same chemical reactions, the same language, with hardly any variation worthy of mention.

– Christian DeDuve, Blueprint for a cell.

How can all life be one when some of it’s living and some of it isn’t? That’s the difference between Biblical vs. Biological life. The common threads are that life is derived from water, water’s so fundamental to life that it becomes a challenge to adequately describe it, and life is sustained by energy from hydrogen.

This is made possible through the structure of the chlorophyll molecule. Chlorophyll is a porphyrin ring structure molecule which allows Hydrogen to power metabolism in plants. Animals eat plants. The common thread here is that hemoglobin is a porphyrin ring structure which allows Hydrogen to power metabolism in animals. This is the boundary which establishes what the Bible considers to be living: hemoglobin based metabolism. You’re alive if you have blood.
