The Potter’s Hand

The Lord said to me, “Go down to the potter’s house, where I will give you my message.” So I went there and saw the potter working at his wheel. Whenever a piece of pottery turned out imperfect, he would take the clay and make it into something else.

(Jeremiah 18:1-4) Good News Translation

We have to deduce a physical process by which a solid ball of stratified sediment, the Earth at the end of the second day, is formed into a hollow sphere with a hydrological system by the end of the third day.

The Lord created the heavens—
he is the one who is God!
He formed and made the earth—
he made it firm and lasting.
He did not make it a desolate waste,
but a place for people to live.
It is he who says, “I am the Lord,
and there is no other god.

(Isaiah 45:18) Good News Translation

Once again we can deduce our way to the understanding we need by realizing that these passages may be poetic, but they’re a poetic rendering of accurate physics.

We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.

Matty’s Razor

Then the Lord said to me, “Don’t I have the right to do with you people of Israel what the potter did with the clay? You are in my hands just like clay in the potter’s hands.

Let’s also consider another passage of scripture, in which God likens His work of shaping the destiny of mankind as being like a potter working clay, before we propose a process by which the dry land was made to appear on the third day.

The word formed is the key, the Hebrew word translated as formed: יֹצֵ֨ר – yatsar. Part of the meaning of this word describes how a potter shapes a hollow vessel from a solid lump of clay.

How would a potter stretch out the Earth above the waters, and establish the Earth upon the floods by forming it? What could be more poetic than the craft of the potter picturing the mode of action of the creative act of the third day? It’s not poetry for the sake of being poetic. It’s a poetic rendering of a geophysical process.

Taking this into consideration let’s compare what we think the Earth looked like at the end of the second day with what we think it looked like at the end of the third day and bear in mind that part of the meaning of the word formed in Isaiah 45:18 has to do with the work of the potter.

Faith is believing in something that you can’t see, because of evidence.

  1. Call upon the name of Jesus Christ,
    • believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
  2. confess your sin.

Not only can we use Hypothesis 22 to use flowery poetic language as a description of accurate physics, but we can also establish a role in the creative process for the fountains of the great deep, and this is significant. God is even more mysterious and wise than you give Him credit for, even if you already think that he’s mysterious and wise.

More recent concept of the creative act of the 3rd day.

The reason for creation is the manifestation of sentient life with free will.

– The Reason for Creation

God created the heavens and stretched them out;
he fashioned the earth and all that lives there;
he gave life and breath to all its people.

(Isaiah 42:5) Good News Translation

“I am the Lord, your savior;
I am the one who created you.
I am the Lord, the Creator of all things.
I alone stretched out the heavens;
when I made the earth, no one helped me.

(Isaiah 44:24) Good News Translation

Another connection we can make is the idea that the earth was spread forth or spread out. It’s the word in Psalms 136:6 translated stretched out, raqaרָקַע. It’s almost the same word as firmament: רָקִ֫יעַ – raqia , which was also stretched out. We discuss this in the post spreads, stretches, stretched. There is conceptual consistency between the creative act on the second day with the creative act of the third day. Things on Earth are copies of things in the heavens.

Those things, which are copies of the heavenly originals, had to be purified in that way. But the heavenly things themselves require much better sacrifices.
