This month has been a challenging look at the 4th day of creation, because it involves pulling down a stronghold of science: theoretical physics. We’ve known that we would have to do this for many years but we avoided it for as long as possible.
We’ve had quite a few adventures along the way, and we’ve been derailed by some of the unlikeliest people. We got into trouble at an Independent Baptist Church for taking a very scientific approach to understanding the Bible. We were frustrated at the poor state of scientific knowledge of our Pastors and church leaders. In 2007 they voted us out.
We’re just as appalled now by the poor state of scientific knowledge among today’s scientists, so much so that we’ve designated them as scientifically illiterate science worshipers (SISWs).
After we got saved in 1997 we were grieved by the state that our was life was in, and how it had gotten that way. We thought that we were clever, and we were arrogant and condescending to everyone. We were puffed up with the knowledge we had of the process of evolution and we convinced ourselves that there was no God, anyone who believed in God was an idiot. Under the power of our humanistic wisdom we made every mistake there was to make and we ruined my life. Now, saved, we fell to our knees to repent. We really expected a bolt of lightening to come through the ceiling and blast us to pieces.
There was no bolt of lightening. We had to get up, dust ourselves off and figure out what to do next. We concluded that our error was using man’s wisdom to run our life, and we wondered at what point in our reasoning we had gone astray and how we had ended up in such a pitiful state. We took a King James Bible, which had been given to me by our Grandad when we were a child, turned it to Genesis chapter 1 and put it next to our Paleobotany textbook at the chart of the geological time periods. We got down on our knees and began to prayerfully study the sequence of events in the two histories to see where we could have made the mistake and gone off the rails.
There’s nothing in common between the two accounts of the history of the Earth. Nothing. Tears filled our eyes when it became obvious to us that we hadn’t made an innocent mistake and ended up in the wrong place. We had made a willful choice to reject the testimony of God.
That was when we decided that we would make amends by having unquestioning faith in Gods Word. We didn’t understand it then like we understand it now, but our commitment to God was to believe His word whether or not we understood it. We would find out exactly why the scientific narrative is different from what the Bible says, and set the record straight. We made the vow that Isaiah made:
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

That was 20 years ago and it has taken us until now to have a clear vision of what we’re doing.
We’ve floundered along the way. We got sidetracked several times and was just idling, achieving nothing, not knowing what to do. In 2013 we were so desperate for guidance that we went to Ethiopia on a mission trip. God answered our prayer and we heard a sermon at Beza International Evangelical Church in which the message was loud and clear: there’s a book in you that only you can write!
We knew that we were going to have to pick our way all the way through the stronghold of science and demonstrate that it’s weak, not strong. It’s built on shifting sand, not solid rock. By faith we knew that the Bible is true. Anything that stands in opposition against the Bible, or appears to, it’ll be possible to neutralize. This meant that we would have to gird up our mind and learn enough about Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Einstein and the rest, to be able to refute them. It was going to be necessary to destroy the theoretical basis of the scientific narrative of godless existence. We knew that through prayer, Bible study and the agency of the Holy Spirit, it could be done. Several people have asked us this:
- SISW: Do you really think that you’re smarter than Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Einstein?
- Matty: if necessary.
We’ll be whatever we need to be, we’ll do whatever needs to be done. We know that we can come across as arrogant. We don’t really think that it can be helped. We’ve spent 20 or so years working in custodial services learning humility, but even so, when we tell people that the great minds of science were wrong and here’s why, people are going to think that we’re being arrogant.
We’ve been called to do this. We didn’t decide that we wanted to prove to the world that we’re smarter than all of the scientists in the world. We’re simply being what we need to be to do the work that God has called us to do. We’ve built Matty’s Paradigm on the solid rock of the Word of God. We realized that there was a need for a major course correction in science which would remove it as a stumbling block and leave the way open for the young ones coming up, and we offered ourselves for this work. We had no idea that we would be going head-to-head with the likes of Newton and Einstein. However:
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
