Principle I
God Can’t Lie and the Bible is True
in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began
(Titus 1:2) ESV
At the beginning of October we were challenged regarding the statement we make which is the beginning of our deductive process:
God can’t lie and the Bible is true.
Principia Mattymatica – Principle I
What looks to us like a simple logical step was objected to by a Christian who was suddenly scared that being a Christian means that he has to believe the Bible. He perceived this as a problem because, as far as he knew, the Bible is anachronistic poetry which was written by Bronze Age goat herders who didn’t know where the sun went at night. He illustrates one of the difficulties of being a Christian in the age of popular science (SciPop).
We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.
– Matty’s Razor
The challenge was to fill in the logical gap between God cannot lie and the Bible is true. It’s not difficult to connect these two statements using scripture, however, it occurred to us that, if we were to take a Newtonian approach to it, then these ought to be be Principles which could be deduced from Axioms.
If the Bible is true then it must account for all physical evidence and empirical observations. If we eliminate the assumptions of the popular science paradigm (SciPop) we see that it does.
We have to make a tiny little detour here and make the note that there are people who will latch on to this premise and state that, if God can’t lie then he isn’t omnipotent. The flaw with this point of view is that God created the world so that we could lie, that’s the nature of free will, as such God is outside of, is greater than, and has power over the physical reality in which lying is possible.
