In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
(John 1:4) ESV
When we combine a plain reading of the texts with deductive logic it’s easy to show that Jesus Christ, the Word and “the deep” are all synonyms for God the Son.
The Deep
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
(Genesis 1:2-4)
There’s no direct statement that the deep is either light or life. We’ve been using deduction to make the case that if all of the above is accurate and correct, and we understand the physical nature of matter to the extent that we do, then it’s logical to conclude that the source of Hydrogen for nucleosynthesis, by which process God created light and life, was the deep spoken of in Genesis 1:2.
The Word of God
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
(John 1:1, 4, 9) ESV
Making the case that Jesus Christ and the Word of God are the same person isn’t difficult, however, it serves to illustrate a point and confirm our hypothesis by looking at the words that are used. The Word is described as light and life. Here again the Word is described as the Word of life.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—
(1 John 1:1-2) ESV
Jesus Christ
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
(John 8:12) ESV
In the gospel of John Jesus repeatedly made the claim that he is the light of the world.
We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
(John 9:4-5) ESV
So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”
(John 12:35-36) ESV
I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
(John 12:46) ESV
Jesus also described himself as the life. The development of organic life on the 1st day, based around the process of DNA replication and cell division, is the subject of our daily devotional for January.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
(John 14:6) ESV
