And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
(Revelation 2:23) KJV
It may seen random or coincidental that the two meanings of the word reins: a bridle for a horse; or the kidneys, can be both be part of a physiological process which can guide and influence us.
We have found, however, that where the Holy Spirit is concerned there’s nothing coincidental or random. The word reins was used to describe a horse bridle and the kidneys because they do fundamentally the same thing: they regulate behavior.
Now as logical as this may seem it’s still not a new idea because the ancient Hebrews seem to have been well aware of the connection. It can be said that if my heart is pure then my reins will be too; if there’s impurity and corruption in my heart it will also be in my kidneys.
This has implications for health and wellness. What causes kidney disease? Bad diet? Or could it be due to us failing to regulate our behavior such that the kidneys become overwhelmed with corruption and impurity? There’s a whole other level of cause and effect in play when we realize that our physiology and the content of our character are more intimately related than we may like.

June 16 (20) – Spiritual Reins
The kidneys, referred to in the Bible as reins, regulate our physiology. They’re a way in which a bridle has been put on us by which we can be steered and controlled.
