We (that’s me and the Holy spirit) only know what we’ve been told, but everything that we’ve been told has been given us for a reason. We may ask: what does a prophetic vision of a war in heaven have to do with events on the Earth?
Well, we find time and time again that things on Earth have been patterned after things in the heavens.
It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
(Hebrews 9:23) KJV
This being the case we could perhaps conclude that the pain of childbirth for human women is patterned after the pain of childbirth of the heavenly woman. Except that the pain of childbirth for human women is a direct consequence of Eve’s sin in the garden of Eden. Roll that around a couple of times. We’re not told anything about whether or not the heavenly woman sinned, but, if she had sinned, then why wasn’t she kicked out of heaven along with Satan? Michael and the heavenly host were arrayed in her defense. You can torture yourself with these kind of questions.
Our approach is to stick with what we’ve been told. In this case the pain of childbirth was part of the curse on women in Genesis 3. Cause and effect. As a result the curse fell upon all women, including her heavenly progenitor. Now it’s simple deduction to place Revelation 12, with its woman travailing in childbirth and the subsequent war in heaven, after the fall of man. That’s a conclusion which we deduced, based on the facts that we have. We haven’t imputed any meaning to it and we didn’t make anything up.
What are the logical consequences of this deduction? Do they contradict or support the broad narrative of scripture? If we deduce something which contradicts the broad narrative then there’s a flaw in our reasoning.
So what’s the broad narrative? The universe was created in a fallen state in order to manifest free will, but all of history turns on the event in Eden when mankind made use of that free will – for the first time – and disobeyed God’s command. That’s congruent, it doesn’t cause any conflict.
