Do human pastors actually believe anything? They can point you to Jesus Christ the savior but, since they don’t believe that hell or heaven are physical places, what do you need to be saved from or to?
Most modern theology is a rationalization of the premise that the Bible isn’t scientifically accurate but God is faithful so we should do our best to obey his commands. It’s facilitated by the fact the gospel is absurdly simple:
Besides the part about Jesus Christ being the Son of God we’re not even expected to believe anything. It demonstrates the eternally robust strength of the gospel. You can be saved and know that you have everlasting life while believing very little of the material that’s in the Bible.
Someone else believed it for you and did the work necessary to redeem your soul.
Douglas Adams prophesied this very thing when he created the Electric Monk for his Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency series. It may be that the day comes when the only person you can trust is a robot.
The Electric Monk was a labour-saving device, like a dishwasher or a video recorder. Dishwashers washed tedious dishes for you, thus saving you the bother of washing them yourself, video recorders watched tedious television for you, thus saving you the bother of looking at it yourself; Electric Monks believed things for you, thus saving you what was becoming an increasingly onerous task, that of believing all the things the world expected you to believe.
