Science is the Result of Faith

And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.

(2 Peter 3:15-16) ESV

We’re going to pin down a way to refer to two major opposing ideologies. You’ve heard them referred to as science vs. religion, science vs. faith, fact vs. faith for example.

Creation vs. evolution is another, although that’s is merely a distraction and we should be able to kill it once and for all. You see, terminology is very important. When words are used correctly, meaning that they have accurate definitions with consistent application, then it should be possible for everyone to understand what we’re talking about and agree on something, even if it’s just the term we use.

We (that’s me and the Holy spirit) started working on understanding the difference between science and popular science (SciPop) on January 17th. We defined SciPop as science falsely so called, in which physical evidence and empirical observations (experimental science) has been woven into a false narrative of godless existence (theoretical SciPop).

In SciPop, you’ve been told that “faith is belief without evidence.” The problem is that we all have exactly the same evidence. This is an epistemological tool known as Matty’s Razor. No matter what you believe, evidence is still evidence and we all have access to it. As such we have to understand that faith is believing what you can’t see because of the evidence. As a result, SciPop is faith-based.

The issue which we’re honing in on is: what are we referring to when we talk about religion? As far as SciPop is concerned, religion is its antithesis, even though, technically, they’re the same thing: believing in something that you can’t see because of the evidence.

1. The opposite of SciPop can’t be faith
   • because SciPop requires faith.
2. The opposite of SciPop can’t be religion
   • because SciPop is religion.

So, faith and science are bound up together in this thing that we call knowledge. The knowledge was arrived at by having faith (hoping for something that we can’t see) that the evidence tells it’s own story of how it came to exist. When we understand the causal factors involved in producing the evidence, then we have science.

SciPop vs. The Ignorant

That didn’t get any closer to our goal, so let’s look at it from another angle. If what people refer to as science is the result of faith, then who are the people in religion who argue against SciPop? And how should we refer to them? Religious people who (supposedly) believe the Bible are arguing a case for it from with a false paradigm which has been designed for the express purpose of discrediting the Bible (SciPop). Worse than that they don’t even want to be told.

We don’t have much help on this one but we have to come up with a term to use to refer to these folk which embodies this context. Ignorant? From today’s featured passage? Could we use that? The argument which rages continually between the forces of light and darkness, good and evil is a battle between SciPop and The Ignorant?

Well, Christians are still arguing against Darwinian evolution, molecules to man, but no one cares: that’s not the definition of evolution that the world uses. The world has moved on and helpfully separated abiogenesis from evolution. Evolution is now simply: change in allele frequency over time. It’s embarrassing and counter-productive when Christians argue against evolution. The process of evolution is extensively documented, the nuance is the context we put it in: it started in Genesis 3:16.

When Christians insist on arguing against a definition of evolution that no one else uses they twist it to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. It makes them look ignorant. Ignorant may not be a very kind way to refer to religious people who are fighting the good fight, doing their best, but we need to drive this point home. The old ways aren’t working. It’s time to upgrade your rhetoric.
