Politics, Hell and Climate Change
For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.(Deuteronomy 32:22) KJV
Some of the most vocally opposed to the idea that climate change is real are evangelical Christians. It’s ironic since the Bible makes it clear that hell’s been expanding since it was kindled at the fall of man.
Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.(Isaiah 5:14) KJV
The prevailing attitude of climate change denial within evangelical Christianity has nothing to do with what the Bible says about it, it’s the influence of Republican-party-big-business politics in the USA.
We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.– Matty’s Razor
Part of this is due to a naïve belief that anything catastrophic which happens to the earth is going to be caused by God, not man. This attitude manifests itself as the belief that mankind can do whatever it likes with the earth because it isn’t going to have any effect, and, in the long run, why does it matter anyway if the earth is going be destroyed at the end of the age?
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.(2 Peter 3:10-13) KJV
This is an over simplification but there’s a clear chain of causality:
The Climate Change Denying Pro-business Agenda Driving Evangelical Christianity
- Republicans are pro-business and anti-regulation;
- Climate change, if real and anthropogenic, warrants an urgent proactive approach which should involve heavy restrictions on carbon emissions etc.;
- This would make US big businesses noncompetitive in the global market place and affect profits.
- Republican politicians get their campaign support from profitable big businesses.
- Evangelical Christians think that they need Republican politicians to preserve their freedom of religion (and gun rights),
- Therefore evangelical Christians support Republican politicians and are, by default, climate change deniers.
An Unequal Yoke
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?(2 Corinthians 6:14) KJV
There is so much wrong here that it’s hard to grasp. Firstly it is an unequal yoke.
Hell is Expanding
Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.(Isaiah 14:9) KJV
Secondly hell is expanding. Not only is hell expanding, but it’s anthropogenic in a tragically ironic way because it’s due to the continual influx of human sous and debris. Biblically speaking the idea of the expansion of hell was so ingrained in the mindset of the ancient Hebrews that it was used as a metaphor for greediness:
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:(Habakkuk 2:5) KJV
This passage isn’t about the expansion of hell, the expansion of hell is being used to picture the voracious appetite of a drunken man who has insatiable lusts for worldly pleasure.
Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.(Proverbs 27:20) KJV
The purpose of creation is to bring about the permanent physical separation of light from darkness, day from night, good from evil.– The Purpose of Creation
Are You Listening?
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.(Revelation 2:11) KJV
How can a supposedly Bible believing Christian, with a good conscience, deny climate change? Here’s a couple of news headlines from this date 2 years ago (2020):
And here are some headlines from one year ago (2021):
And this year (2022).
- Call upon the name of Jesus Christ,
- believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
